As a home buyer, what should you look for in an agent? We’ll get to that in a moment…
It’s funny that when I tell people I work in residential real estate, they invariably say, “Oh, you sell homes.” Because when most people think of real estate, they think of listings and the selling of their own home. But in any transaction there are, of course, two sides, a Seller and a Buyer. Working with Buyers as well as Sellers requires that the agent be well-versed in the unique needs of both. As for me, I enjoy working with both Buyer and Seller equally. The advantage to you the Buyer is that I’ve been on both sides, and I understand the needs and mindset of the Seller and the Listing Agent alike.
So back to my opening question, what should you look for in an agent? Far and away the most important quality Buyers remember about their agent is his or her ability to communicate. Setting up the method and frequency of communication needs to be established early on. I like to keep my clients informed every step of the way; and in those rare moments when there’s really little going on, I’ll give you a call and tell you just that. You need to know. Strange as it may seem, many agents forget that buying a home is probably the biggest financial decision you will ever make. I never forget that.
Then you need to find the right home. I’ll make sure you have access to all the listings, both through Internet access and through my own frequent and diligent searches. To help find the right neighborhood, I rely on knowledge of the county developed over 55 years as a Marin resident. And when you do find the home, I’ll be sure you understand the market at that point in time, essential to making the offer that will get you into contract.
Then we negotiate. I’ll make sure you get the best deal possible, and that means not just through the initial contract acceptance, but in the often critical phase of secondary negations for the Inspection Contingency Removal. Once escrow is behind you and you are the happy owners of your home, those fifty-plus years have given me a long list of talented and reliable service providers, from painters to gardeners to auto mechanics.
Lastly, I promise to stay in touch with you, and not just for a year. I believe that when we establish a relationship through the purchase of your home, it’s just that, a relationship, and one to be valued.
