Sausalito

With it’s houses perched dramatically on the wooded slopes of Marin’s southernmost hills, Sausalito is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and is the first town a visitor will encounter heading north from San Francisco. The views of the Bay and the city are stunning.

With the masts from the clustered ships in the yacht harbor and the waterside promenade, people have always compared Sausalito to the Mediterranean and the Riviera. Incorporated in 1893, Sausalito has been many things; fishing village, artist and writer colony, a center of Bay Area beat culture, and boatman’s paradise. Sausalito hugs the bay shore for two and one half miles but is a small town of only 7,500 residents.

Walk along the bay or up in the peaceful hills, dine in the many restaurants or shop in the abundance of eclectic stores. With its fountains and parks and open air cafes, Sausalito has both a side that beckons a steady stream of tourists and a quiet, intimate side with small neighborhood streets and its famous houseboat marinas.
